SONG OF THE DAY: XV - "Smallville" (Prod. J. Cole) ♫ Beautiful New Song

First off, it should be known that XV is a true lyricist and I am a major fan. He has been on the down low for way too long and I am really hoping this song blows up.

The up and coming rap sensation's new song, "Smallville," is hands down one of the best songs I've heard in years. It is a beautiful trip into fantastical reality that is full of Superman references and soul. The track was produced by fellow young star J. Cole, who was the first artist on Roc Nation and is widely considered as Brooklyn rap legend Jay Z's protege (talk about big shoes... Shaq's don't even compare). Cole molded an extremely deep, mellow, bass-heavy beat that hits straight to the heart (I mean bass like the instrument by the way... And who knew he could produce so well?! A real duel threat). He uses a Smashing Pumpkins sample beautifully; another reason I drool for this track (come back around Billy Corgan!!!!). More importantly (in my opinion), XV lays some of his best rhymes ever written on this beat and you can hear his soul through his voice. With deep, philosophical subject matter, and diverse, smooth, lyrical wordplay, XV brings his "A" game here.

Stand Out Lyrics:

"No Zack and Kelly but tell me into the Max we go...
And treat these verses like Margherito and Pacquiao...
Teachers thought I'd never come out of my shell... and well...
Now I hop on beats and go Pistachio!
They'll never steal my dreams like... Leo DiCaprio.... so....
Before the madness grows, I spit what they have to know...
In a town that was small, I crashed to the lawn...
The effect that I had was like a splash in a pond..."

AND THE WHOLE CHORUS!!!!!

BOTTOM LINE: A+ music

We here at SCS love both of the VERY talented MCs involved in this track and wish them long, prosperous careers. This is my "Jam of the Year" so far for 2011 so I hope Ya'll like it! ... AND INFINITE SAD FACES TO XV FOR GETTING JIPPED OUT OF A SPOT IN THE XXL FRESHMEN 2011 ISSUE.. VIZZY, YELAWOLF, CYHI DA PRINCE, AND JAY ELECTRONICA DESERVED IT MORE THAN ANYONE AND I'M JUST HAPPY XXL GOT TWO OF FOUR RIGHT!! Haha... but its always love here at SCS, so shouts to XXL for creating such a respected showcase for new talents! One love to all!

Yours Truly,

Tim "Treezus" Guerin

If you can't feel this one... You've lost your touch kid.
